My Hair Care Routine

Hair Care Routine.png

I have constantly been asked about my hair care routine of what products I use to keep my hair healthy. I’ll be sharing how I take care of my hair, the products I use and the lifestyle I follow to care for my hair and my overall health.

My Hair Type

Ever since I was a baby, I have been blessed with thick, wavy hair! It was passed down from my parents as both my parents have similar hair texture.

How I Take Care of My Hair

Coconut Oil

Ahh, coconut oil brings back so many memories. I always remember my mom making me sit in front of a mirror while getting me ready for school and applying coconut oil as she braids my hair. It used to be a slippery, sticky concoction and I could never touch my hair without it getting my hands all oily. The smell of coconut oil every morning would make me dread getting ready for school.

As I grew older and started getting ready by myself, I ignored coconut oil completely. However, because I stopped using it, I noticed that my hair and scalp got so dry and it would cause dandruff. That’s when I decided to give coconut oil another chance. I would soak my scalp and hair from the roots to the ends, before washing it off in the shower. As I added coconut oil into my hair care routine, I noticed that my scalp would feel nourished and my hair looked shiny and healthy. That one hour that I keep my hair and scalp soaked in coconut oil keeps it healthy and shiny throughout the whole week. I still continue it to this day and it’s a staple in my routine.

Coconut oil stimulates hair growth getting deep into its follicles. Coconut oil promotes the scalp health fighting against such problems as insect bites, lice, and dandruff. It moisturizes dry hair while adding luster, shine, and softness to the hair (LucyBee).

My favorite brand of coconut oil is the trusted Parachute Coconut Oil.

Shampoo

After soaking my hair in coconut oil for an hour, I wash it off with shampoo. As far as washing is concerned, I usually wash my hair every three to four days. It’s recommended that you don’t wash it too often, like every day. It’s better to wash it only a couple of times a week. Since I have thick hair, my hair doesn’t get oily as fast either, so that’s a plus.

Some of my favorite shampoos are Ouidad Curl Quencher Shampoo and OGX Nourishing Coconut Milk Shampoo. The Ouidad shampoo moisturizes my hair and keeps the texture of my natural curls. The OGX shampoo keeps my hair and scalp nourished and soft.

Conditioner/Hair Mask

The last step as I wash my hair is to finish off with a conditioner or a hair mask. The benefits of conditioner are that it makes the hair softer, reduces tangling, reduces the chances of color fading in hair, reduces frizz, prevents damage and breakage and helps in moisture retention.

My favorite conditioner and mask are Aussie 3-Minute Miracle Conditioner and It’s a 10 Miracle Hair Mask.

After finishing my shower, I use a thin towel to wrap around my hair to soak up the water. I remove the towel after ten minutes then let it air dry. I don’t use a hairdryer, to protect my hair from the heat. Plus when I allow my hair to air dry, it maintains my natural curls. I don’t brush my hair after it’s completely dry.

Argan Oil

I love using argan oil after styling my hair as it nourishes the ends and makes my hair look shiny and soft. Argan oil helps hydrate and soften hair. With its high content of antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and vitamin E, the benefits of argan oil naturally help increase hair's elasticity and consistently restore shine to dull, lifeless hair. My favorite argan oil is from Josie Maran.

Some other random products that I love for my hair are listed here.

  • Paddle Brush - This brush is what I use to brush my hair I’ve been using a paddle brush for almost five years now and it has changed the game. Paddle brushes are great for saving your hair from breakage! I start brushing from the bottom and then work my way up in sections so that I don’t pull my hair.

  • Silk Pillowcase - Using a silk pillowcase will keep your face healthy, help your skin retain moisture, reduce bed head and split ends, minimizes tangles and helps keep hair hydrated. It’s affordable and I love how soft it feels on the skin and hair.

  • Goody Hair Ties - My favorite brand of hair ties or rubber bands. They don’t tug the hair and damage it. The hair ties hold your hair securely in place. Great for pulling your hair up any time of day.

  • Hair Towel - I usually get a thin towel from any local department store. It soaks up the water leaving the hair damp and doesn’t dry out the hair like a regular thick towel.

  • Vitamins - Antioxidants like vitamins C and E help cells fight off free radicals that can damage the scalp and hair follicles while biotin and zinc team up to give the body what it needs to absorb healthy-hair nutrients and build strong tresses. Take a multivitamin daily to keep your hair and skin healthy and strong.

  • Healthy food - Eggs are a great source of protein and biotin, two nutrients that may promote hair growth. Berries are loaded with beneficial compounds and vitamins that may promote hair growth. Spinach is a healthy green vegetable that’s loaded with beneficial nutrients like folate, iron, and vitamins A and C, all of which may promote hair growth. Fatty fish like salmon, herring, and mackerel have nutrients that may promote hair growth. Sweet Potatoes are a great source of beta-carotene. The body converts this compound into vitamin A, which is linked to good hair health. Avocados contain vitamin E which protects areas of the skin, like the scalp, from oxidative stress and damage while promoting hair growth. Nuts are packed with nutrients like vitamin E, B vitamins, zinc, and essential fatty acids, all of which may promote hair growth and are linked to many other health benefits.

  • Conair Curling Iron - This is the brand that I use. I’ve been using it for more than 5 years and I love it. It makes my curls look soft and shiny. I used it in my video too. My hair holds curls really well. I don’t use heat that often to protect my hair from damage. So, I would curl my hair if I have an event to go to or if I’m filming and the curls would stay until I wash my hair again.
