Updated Hair Care Routine 2021
Since the lockdown in 2020, I’ve been wanting to curate a routine that would help me enhance and maintain my natural hair texture as well as find clean products that address the problem areas on my face and maintain the skin. Since then I’ve curated a new routine for my hair and skin. I’ve been researching more about the ingredients in each product and how it helps my skin and hair. Being more conscious of that, I’ve built routines that suit my specific skin and hair type. The products that I have listed below have been working well for my scalp and hair. If you have a similar hair texture as me, you may benefit from using these products. Otherwise, this is just an inspiration to look into products that work for your hair, scalp, and budget. So, take a little step to take care of yourself to be the best you.
My Hair Type
Ever since I was a baby, I have been blessed with thick, wavy hair! To be precise, I have 2B waves. It was passed down from my parents as both my parents have similar hair textures.
How I Take Care of My Hair
Shampoo
As far as washing is concerned, I usually wash my hair every three to four days. It’s recommended that you don’t wash it too often, like every day. It’s better to wash it only a couple of times a week. Since I have thick hair, my hair doesn’t get oily as fast either, so that’s a plus. I shampoo my hair once, rinse and repeat depending on how clean my scalp gets. I’ve recently been using the MorocconOil Hydrating Shampoo. To maintain the moisture of my naturals waves I use this shampoo. It’s safe for color-treated hair and is free of sulfates, parabens, and phosphates. To remove the buildup in my hair and dandruff, I use a purifying shampoo every other week. I’ve been using the Davines Purifying Shampoo. This one is also free of sulfates and parabens.
Hair Mask
Next, I use a hair mask to lock in deep moisture in the hair. This is mainly focused on the mid and ends of my hair, not focusing on the roots. I use the Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque after I rinse out my shampoo. I leave it in for 5-10 mins and rinse it out.
Conditioner
The benefits of conditioner are that it makes the hair softer, reduces tangling, reduces the chances of color fading in hair, reduces frizz, prevents damage and breakage, and helps in moisture retention. My favorite conditioners are Aussie 3-Minute Miracle Conditioner and Shea Moisture Curl & Shine Conditioner.
After finishing my shower, I use a thin towel to wrap around my hair. I don’t use a hairdryer, to protect my hair from the heat. Plus when I allow my hair to air dry, it maintains my natural curls.
Curling Cream
After my shower, I like to keep my hair as wet as possible so that it holds the curl products well. If I feel like my hair is a bit damper than wet, I use a spray bottle filled with water and spray it all over my hair. Then I proceed to split my hair into two sections and run a curling cream through my hair with my fingers. Afterward, I scrunch the waves up with my fingers and let them sit the way I want them to dry. I’ve been using the Curl Up Curl Defining Cream. It holds my waves without being too stiff and matte. I try not to touch my hair after I apply the curl cream so that it doesn’t get frizzy. After it is completely dry, I scrunch the waves up gently to loosen up the hard cast. It gives it a nice shine and a strong hold throughout the week making my hair look very natural and healthy. For watch how I apply the cream, check out the video at the end of the post.
Some other random products that I love for my hair are listed here.
Paddle Brush - This brush is what I use to brush my hair I’ve been using a paddle brush for almost five years now and it has changed the game. Paddle brushes are great for saving your hair from breakage! I start brushing from the bottom and then work my way up in sections so that I don’t pull my hair.
Silk Pillowcase - Using a silk pillowcase will keep your face healthy, help your skin retain moisture, reduce bed head and split ends, minimizes tangles, and helps keep hair hydrated. It’s affordable and I love how soft it feels on the skin and hair.
Goody Hair Ties - My favorite brand of hair ties or rubber bands. They don’t tug the hair and damage it. The hair ties hold your hair securely in place. Great for pulling your hair up any time of day.
Hair Towel - I usually get a thin towel from any local department store. It soaks up the water leaving the hair damp and doesn’t dry out the hair like a regular thick towel.
Vitamins - Antioxidants like vitamins C and E help cells fight off free radicals that can damage the scalp and hair follicles while biotin and zinc team up to give the body what it needs to absorb healthy-hair nutrients and build strong tresses. Take a multivitamin daily to keep your hair and skin healthy and strong.
Healthy food - Eggs are a great source of protein and biotin, two nutrients that may promote hair growth. Berries are loaded with beneficial compounds and vitamins that may promote hair growth. Spinach is a healthy green vegetable that’s loaded with beneficial nutrients like folate, iron, and vitamins A and C, all of which may promote hair growth. Fatty fish like salmon, herring, and mackerel have nutrients that may promote hair growth. Sweet Potatoes are a great source of beta-carotene. The body converts this compound into vitamin A, which is linked to good hair health. Avocados contain vitamin E which protects areas of the skin, like the scalp, from oxidative stress and damage while promoting hair growth. Nuts are packed with nutrients like vitamin E, B vitamins, zinc, and essential fatty acids, all of which may promote hair growth and are linked to many other health benefits.
